Sacriston Academy classroom

Year 2H

We have a busy year planned for Year 2 pupils with lots to cover in the run up to the KS1 SATs. Through our Cornerstones topics, we will be beachcombers, knights, gardeners, ‘mucky’ artists and pirates. These exciting topics will be used to cover the Year 2 expectations for science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing and PE.

In mathematics we use the ‘White Rose Hub Scheme’ to aim towards mastery and greater depth in maths. The children will become fluent mathematicians, enabling them to solve real life problems such as menu pricing and timetables. They will also learn how to reason.

English is taught by reading and studying various texts including poetry and non-fiction books. These provide stimuli for children to write their own versions using their own imagination. Pupils will develop writing skills, vocabulary, punctuation and grammar.

Reading is taught through a systematic approach to phonics. Using the Read Write Inc technique, we develop phonic knowledge which enables children to read with fluency and expression. Books are carefully matched to the reading ability of pupils in Year 2.

What the children say:

"I have enjoyed sharing adventures with Snail and Whale." - Mason "Science is fun as we get to plan investigations and then do them!" - Finn "Mrs Haslam loves to challenge us in maths by setting tricky problems and puzzles that we need to solve." - Oliver

What's happening this term?

Wriggle and crawl

Our new topic this half term is ‘wriggle and crawl.’ We will be out and about on the hunt for minibeasts. We might, if we are lucky, spot the Hungry Caterpillar! Then we will take a closer look at their habitats and how they protect and camouflage themselves. Later we will be making food chains and finding out who is the predator and who is the prey.

In English we will be using a more visual approach. We will watch short animated film clips and write character studies, settings and non-chronological reports.

In maths we will look at 2D and 3D shapes recognising their properties and then comparing and sorting them. Later in the half term our focus will be fractions - recognising, finding, naming and writing 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity. Then write simple fractions e.g. 1/2 of 6 = 3 and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2. Just before the Easter break we will be measuring the length and the height of objects.

What their teacher says:

I feel incredibly privileged that I can share my passion for learning here at Sacriston Academy and play a part in encouraging pupils to become independent, creative problem solvers. Here in 2H learning is fun with a new adventure every day.
