Year 2S

We have a busy year planned for Year 2 pupils with lots to cover in the run up to the KS1 SATs. Through our Cornerstones topics, we will be beachcombers, knights, gardeners, ‘mucky’ artists and pirates. These exciting topics will be used to cover the Year 2 expectations for science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing and PE.

In mathematics we use the ‘White Rose Hub Scheme’ to aim towards mastery and greater depth in maths. The children will become fluent mathematicians, enabling them to solve real life problems such as menu pricing and timetables. They will also learn how to reason.

English is taught by reading and studying various texts including poetry and non-fiction books. These provide stimuli for children to write their own versions using their own imagination. Pupils will develop writing skills, vocabulary, punctuation and grammar.

Reading is taught through a systematic approach to phonics. Using the Read Write Inc technique, we develop phonic knowledge which enables children to read with fluency and expression. Books are carefully matched to the reading ability of pupils in Year 2.

What their teacher says:

I am honoured to be part of Sacriston Academy. My class are determined, kind and caring individuals who always try their best. I can’t wait for the exciting year ahead.

What's happening this term?

Muck, mess and mixtures

Our topic this term is muck, mess and mixtures. In science we carried out an experiment to investigate what will happen when we mix different materials such as clay, shaving foam and cooking oil with water. We found out that some materials float like glitter, some dissolve like sugar and some float like the cooking oil.

English

In English we will be using a more visual approach. We will watch short animated film clips and write character studies, settings and non-chronological reports.

Maths

In maths we will look at 2D and 3D shapes recognising their properties and then comparing and sorting them. Later in the half term our focus will be fractions - recognising, finding, naming and writing 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity. Then write simple fractions e.g. 1/2 of 6 = 3 and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2. Just before the Easter break we will be measuring the length and the height of objects.
