Pupils at Sacriston Academy had a week packed full of activities for Mental Health Awareness Week 2021.
Nursery loved painting with mud! Isabelle painted a mud flower as Zara and Maisey worked together to create a mud planet.
Reception wiggled their toes and grounded themselves with deep breathes in our outdoor provision to help them feel calm and happy.
Over in Year 1, the class enjoyed wilderness workouts which involved the children turning into rabbits and secretly choosing another pupil to be their warren and another to be a fox. The aim of the game was for the whole group to silently walk around while trying to keep their warren between themself and their fox at all times. The group had great fun playing and concentrating very hard!
Year 2 children went into our garden and planting area to explore sight, touch and smell senses. The group chose a plant and completed some beautiful observational drawings of them.
Our Year 3 class discussed strategies to keep their cool when things get tough, looking at how cloud watching can be a great way to relax and be mindful. The group spotted a dragon, a narwhal and a mermaid in the clouds!
Over in Year 4, the class tried to solve the human knot, untangling themselves as they worked together. Meanwhile, Year 5 focussed on breathing techniques. Each child controlled their breathing as they walked around balancing a small stone on their finger.
Our eldest children in Year 6 marked the week by swapping the classroom for the outdoors, taking their learning to the playground. After reading Darwin's Dragons - a story based on a researcher who worked with Charles Darwin, the group's task was based on surviving on a deserted island, finding essential items around the playground.
