To celebrate National Numeracy Day, pupils at Sacriston Academy have been celebrating all things numbers!

In Nursery, children enjoyed roleplaying in our very own garden centre! Nursery's story this week has been all about a grandfather who grows lots of vegetables in his allotment so the class wanted to be just like Grandad! The children used money to buy all the items that Grandad needs to help him look after his allotment like seeds, pots, and watering cans. When Zander came to the garden centre to buy a watering can, he didn't have enough pennies, so Maisey was a kind friend and gave him one extra penny that he needed! Amber enjoyed using the till as she used the price list to find out how much each item cost.

Over in Reception, pupils went on a shape hunt around our school. The class set off on their maths investigation to see how many shapes there are in real life. Reception found lots of different shapes everywhere from circular clocks and gigantic rectangle doors.

Year 1 marked the day by writing a fun shape rap. Pupils found words which rhyme with square, circle and kite and put these together in a fantastic rap!

Year 2 ventured outside and used natural materials as concrete resources to help them to answer addition and subtraction questions. The group used sticks to represent the tens and stones to represent the ones in 2-digit numbers!

Year 3 children spent the day looking at managing their money and spending wisely for their futures. Pupils spent hypothetical pocket money on a variety of 'wants' and 'needs' and surveyed Key Stage 2 to find out how they think their money should be managed and invested in charities. Once the data had been gathered, they plotted their findings on bar chart!

Year 4 linked numeracy to their current topic, Road Trip USA by planning a party for the election of Joe Biden with a budget of $35. The class loved working together to plan it!

For Numeracy day, Year 5 delved into the world of jobs, discussing different roles and how maths skills were needed to complete different activities at work. The group discussed some activities that a baker or chef may need to complete at work, such as finding different portion sizes or weighing ingredients. The lesson began with a treasure hunt, finding either pizza, pasta or cupcake recipes. Afterwards, pupils completed a range of different maths questions related to these jobs and completed a paired challenge to see how many dojo points they could receive.

Our eldest children in Year 6 also linked numeracy to work. The class researched a range of different careers and how maths is essential to each of these disciplines!

Summer said: "We learned a pharmacist has to calculate the correct amount of medication for a patient. We used our knowledge of multiplication to work out how many tablets each patient would need to be supplied with."
