Euro Day

As the European Football Championships kick off today, the pupils of Sacriston Academy have been learning all about the competition.

Our Nursery and Reception children loved learning about the England flag and the Euros. The children recognised that because they live in England, the classes will support the English team throughout the competition. To mark the occasion, pupils loved having a penalty shoot-out and playing games with each other in the MUGA.

Year 1 enjoyed learning all about Scotland and its national football team. They enjoyed creating their own flags and making the national animal of Scotland – a unicorn!

Year 2 are supporting Wales and created daffodils as they are the national emblem for Wales. Pupils decorated their classroom door with Welsh flags and dragons.

Year 3 represented France for Euro Day, looking at how it brings countries together from around Europe and found out about its history and events; France is the first country to have a French national female referee in the European Championships! The class created bunting with football-themed French words for the door and discovered that French school children get 2 hours for their dinner break, often get a Wednesday off and don’t wear a uniform.

Year 4 began the day by looking at what the Euros are before moving on to writing their names in graffiti art, which is very prominent in Berlin. The class then focused on Germany as a country, creating fact files, posters and non-chronological reports. Year 4 discovered that Germany has a population of over 80 million people, the capital city is Berlin and that there are lots of famous landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate!

To begin their day, Year 5 discussed what the Euros are and what it involves. They found out which other countries are in England's group and when the football matches will take place. They then looked into their given country - Spain. They found out that Spain is officially called 'Kingdom of Spain' and that it has a population of approximately 47,000,000. Afterwards, they researched Antoni Gaudi, a Spanish born, famous architect. They found out that his designs were based around nature and that he often created his art with small pieces of broken tiles using a trencadis mosaic style. This then influenced Year 5 to work together to create a huge Spain flag using the same trencadis style.

Our eldest pupils in Year 6 began the day by learning about what the Euros are, when they started and how the competition is organised. The class then started researching the 2016 Winners – Portugal. Using their new knowledge, the children designed and created fact files and information texts about Portugal including the culture, climate, history and their involvement in the Euros. They topped off the day by re-creating some Portuguese art.

Over the course of the day, each class went outside and played either a penalty shootout or mini games between each house. The overall winners were…Water! Well done to everyone on what was a wonderful day!
