Roald Dahl day!

Today at Sacriston Academy, we have been celebrating Roald Dahl Day by listening to different stories written by the famous author. We also have some new additions to our Sacristo-nory section of our website - head over and have a listen.

Nursery enjoyed listening to an excerpt from Billy and the MinPins before making their own MinPins out of pegs. The class then used natural materials to make a shelter for their new creations.

Reception loved listening to Mrs Brand's favourite Roald Dahl story, Fantastic Mr Fox. The class talked about what an author is and talked about Roald Dahl and his amazing storytelling.

Over in Year 1, the children listened to a chapter of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The class loved finding out about the scrumptious chocolate river and the pretty meadows of buttercups and treats. Our Sacriston stars designed their own chocolate bars and used adjectives to describe them before counting up chocolate pieces to link to their maths learning.

Year 2 focussed on Matilda, in particular, the way Quentin Blake illustrated her. They created time-lapse videos of their creations to show the precision and hard work it takes to create a character. Then, just like Matilda would, relaxed with a book ready to make some recommendations.

In Year 3, children studied James and the Giant Peach. So, to celebrate Roald Dahl Day, they created observational drawings of some peaches in their art lesson.

For Roald Dahl day, Year 4 looked at George's Marvellous Medicine, looking at examples of poetry from the book itself before coming up with their own rhyming words. Finally, the class combined their hard work to write out their own recipes for medicines!

Year 5 expanded their noun phrases and fronted adverbials in their writing lessons, applying the knowledge they learnt last week, to a task today. Year 5 were given a simple description based upon The BFG and had to use their writing toolkits and knowledge to create descriptive paragraphs.

Our eldest children in Year 6 listened to an extract of Going Solo. The class looked into the role that Roald Dahl held in the RAF during WW2 - linking to their topic of Britain at War. The class enjoyed discussinging how Roald Dahl created suspense in this autobiography whilst talking about his adventures.
