Today pupils have been celebrating European Languages Day across the school!
This morning, our fantastic nursery and reception children learnined how to say basic greetings in German! They said “Hallo” and "Guten Tag" for hello and “Auf Wiedersehen” for goodbye. Reception also enjoyed listening to German nursery rhymes in the afternoon. They learned to sing a German song to the tune of London's Burning.
Bonjour! Year 1 learnined to greet everybody in French. They even learned the word 'turtle' in French which is 'tortou'. This is because it links to the children's new and adapted book 'The Turtle Who Came to Tea'. Also, this afternoon, Year 1 practiced their super dance moves with their new vocabulary such as 'frapper' (clap), sauter (jump) and tourner (turn). Not only this, Caleb, our French superstar has been teaching everybody to count to 10 in French!
Buongiorno! Year 2 looked at Mediterranean Europe by jetting off to Italy today. They learned how to greet each other, greet their teachers and say thank you in Italian, before creating a poster outlining the greetings they have learned. Ciao!
Year 3 have been learning some Greek. They discovered how to say some key phrases including 'good morning' (Kaliméra) and 'what is your name?' (pos se lené?). They then practiced asking one another 'what is your name?' and replying in Greek.
For European Languages Day, Year 4 focused on Polish. They learned how to say basic words such as yes, no, please and thank you. Some of them then moved on to phrases like, 'How are you?' and 'What is your name?'
Year 5 spent time looking at the language of Spain - Spanish. We listened to a video from a Spanish teacher who taught them how to say words relating to superheroes! They learned the words for strong, fast, jumping, flying and climbing! They then played a game of 'Simon Says' where they were asked to complete the superhero actions. They had great fun!
Finally Year 6 started their learning about Germany by taking part in a quiz to see how much they knew. They then learned some basic greetings including how to say Good Morning (Guten Morgen) and Goodbye (Auf Wiedersehen). They also discovered that some German letters have two dots above them and that this is called an ‘Umlaut’ which tells us how to say the sound. They played a game identifying the correct sound and writing the correct letter on a whiteboard.
