Science week is a celebration of science and this year we're clebrating ‘growth’!

Year 6 investigated whether body parts keep growing. We visited different classes in school and chose one child from each class. We drew around their hand and measured the span of their hand. We used this data to create a scatter graph. The general trend showed that hand size did increase with age. We discussed the fact that our data depended on the child we chose because not every child in each class would have the same size hand.

Year 5 looked into the red planet – Mars, designing and creating an animal which could survive on Mars!

Year 4 answered the question, how would a scientist measure the age of a shark? We discovered that they do it by measuring the length of a shark and they do this because a shark continues to grow as it gets older. We then decided to put this to the test ourselves, by measuring each other to see if our height corresponded to our age. We discovered that this was inconclusive as children grow at different rates.

Year 3 focused on engineering. Pupils were challenged to design a tall structure out of spaghetti and marshmallows that was sturdy enough to stand alone for 30 seconds!

Year 2 looked at how tropical rainforest plants grow to facilitate habitats for animals, and also realised that the rubber they used in a previous science investigation was a discovery by plant biologists!  We are in the process of making a huge Venus fly trap!

Year 1 investigated how tall they are by working as a team to cut a piece of string the same height as them. They measured the glue sticks alongside the string and repeated this with different objects such as pens, textbooks and lollypop sticks. We recorded the results in a simple table before testing out a new theory. Did you know that you can predict how big your arm span is by measuring your height? We investigated to see if this was the case.

Reception loved learning all about the different types of growth. The children explored the life cycle of an oak tree as we shared the story 'Tree full of wonder'. From this story,  the children recognised the importance of the trees around us and why they loved the story so much.

Nursery were amazing plant detectives and looked for plants around the school grounds, then planted their own cress seeds.

We all enjoyed our ‘Curly Wurly’ stretching competition, seeing how far we could grow a Curly Wurly! The winners after 3 minutes stretched there’s to 77cm!
