Today we celebrated the work of much-loved Roald Dahl!

In a special assembly, we found out about the many stories he wrote, his many achievements and what made his stories so special! In classes, we studied our chosen Roald Dahl books and completed some fun-filled tasks including poetry writing, creating crocodiles and advertising chocolate bars.

Nursery enjoyed a super fun morning linked to the Roald Dahl story, The Enormous Crocodile.

The class listened carefully to the story then went off to access a range of fun activities, such as making their very own crocodile and feeding the hungry crocodile.

Reception spent their morning exploring Fantastic Mr Fox. The children made their own fox using 2D shapes and showed off their cutting skills. The children also used a range of materials to explore how to design their own Mr Fox before making him in the dough area.

Year 1 listened to a chapter of The BFG and discussed what the witching hour could be!? Yer 1 talked about how they would feel if they found a giant in the middle of their street at night too. Let's say, we would all be a little bit terrified! We talked about how the BFG likes to catch dreams, so the class made their own dream jars in pairs! We have had some fabulous ideas, from singing mermaids to creepy spiders.

Year 2 created their very own Miss Twit. They drew Miss White first, and added things like beards, worms, mouldy cereal and dirty nails to capture the true essence of a Twit! The children wrote sentences to describe her, talking about her swampy hair, rotten egg perfume and vile toenails!

In Year 3 we thought about the strange characters Roald Dahl creates, focusing on James and the Giant Peach. After reading the first two chapters, the children wrote character descriptions to describe the villains of our story, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. They thought the characters seemed despicable, cunning and monstrous!

Year 4 read the story Matilda. We discussed how the characters behave and how this would make other characters feel. After this, we chose our favourite scene from the story and as group, we gathered vocabulary and rhyming words which we used to write our own poems based on Matilda.

Year 5 completed activities centred around Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We recapped advertising from Year 4 and used our knowledge of this to create a poster. The poster was designed to advertise a new chocolate bar being created in Wonka's Factory, using a range of different techniques to make our them amazing.

Year 6 delved into the book Danny, Champion of the World! We looked at the front cover, blurb and contents, before making predictions about what will happen in the book. We then read the first chapter together, discussing key events and phrases. After that, we looked at upleveling phrases and sentences before illustrating and describing a chosen character!

It has been so much fun to celebrte an author whose work holds a special place in our hearts.
