Children across our school have been celebrating Black History Month. Here's what they've been up to...
Reception pupils have been learning all about Mary Seacole. The children learned about how she was a nurse and how selfless she was before creating drawings of her.
Our Year 1 class focused their learning on wildlife photographer, Cbeebies presenter and Strictly Come Dancing champion Hamza Yassin. The class learned about what it means to be an explorer and practiced their own wildlife photography skills by taking some photos of ‘wildlife’ in the classroom.
Year 2 learned all about Sir Lenny Henry. The class made fact files about him and included information about his early life, career and most importantly his charity work in setting up Comic Relief.
For Black History Month, Year 3 have looked at Betty Campbell who was the first black Headteacher in Wales. The group used an information text about her life to answer some comprehension questions. The class also looked at Lewis Hamilton using iPads to research some key information about Lewis' life and placed them into a fact file.
Year 4 learned all about Maya Angelou who was a civil rights activist but also a singer, writer, poet and professor. The group made a factfile about her and wrote about her many achievements. The class loved reading one of her most famous poems 'Still I Rise' and discussed how this showed Maya's resilience and determination to overcome the difficulties she had faced in her life.
Our Year 5 class have been studying Marcus Rashford and the incredible charity work he has done. The class started off by completing a reading comprehension on the footballer, developing their knowledge and understanding of him before creating a factfile about him. The class even learned his celebration!
Year 6 spent an afternoon learning about Lilian Bader in the celebrations of Black History Month. Lilian Bader was one of the first black women to join the British armed forces. For their activity, the class each researched Lilian using iPads and answered questions about her, increasing their knowledge and understanding.
Well done everyone!
