Year 1 & 2 celebrated British Science Week by delving into the Victorian times!

The group were shocked to find out that children as young as reception worked in factories and mines as they discussed the dirty and unsafe conditions. Next, the group explored Victorian toys, and the materials used to make them. No technology, no screens, just wooden spinning tops, marbles, chalks, circle games and dolls! The classes even made their own peg dolls, played Duck Duck Goose, and looked at how materials like chalk, wood and fabric were commonly used to create toys that relied on imagination.

The group looked at the life of Dr Barnardo and his work with street urchins, which led to a discussion about healthy eating, and even making their own sandwiches fit for a Victorian child. The sandwich needed to have the right ingredients to provide them with carbohydrates, vegetables, protein and dairy. The group even got to taste them afterwards, the lettuce and cucumber went down very well!

Great work!
