Our Sacriston Stars celebrated Roald Dahl Day this week! Every September people celebrate Roald Dahl's birthday with a wonderful array of events centred around his birthday on 13th September. Read on to see what exciting activities took place in school!
Reception and Nursery loved listening to Fantastic Mr Fox and finding out about those 3 horrid farmers. The group fed the greedy farmers in the maths areas, made their own fox masks and even crawled through the fox den and over the spots to find the chickens. The classes worked as a team to create a colourful fantastic Mr Fox using printing with cotton reels! Those horrid farmers will never catch any of these sneaky foxes.
Year 1 celebrated Roald Dahl Day by learning all about the Enormous Crocodile. The group read the story, moved liked crocodiles and did lots of crafts to make their own enormous crocodiles!
Year 2 have been reading some of George’s Marvellous Medicine and learning about all the horrible ingredients he put in his mixtures. Pupils were tasked with designing their own recipes and filling their ‘cauldrons’ with interesting ingredients for exciting effects.
Children in Year 3 spent the afternoon designing their own sweets inspired by Willy Wonka in Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. The group spent some time discussing what special powers the sweets might have before thinking of some adjectives to create expanded noun phrases to describe the sweets. The class then designed the packaging by colouring in and constructing nets. It was a great afternoon with some extremely creative ideas!
Year 4 celebrated Roald Dahl day by reading parts of Matilda. The group thought about the key moments in the story and acted them out in small groups and really enjoyed performing them to each other! The class discussed the characters of Miss Trunchbull and Miss Honey and drew portraits of them.
This half term, Year 5 have been reading Boy, a book about Roald Dahl's childhood. For Roald Dahl Day, the group decided to take a closer look at some of the amazing illustrations which are in the autobiography. The class chose some drawings from what they have read so far and had a go at sketching them in the style of Quentin Blake.
Year 6 focused their Roald Dahl day around the book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. The group read extracts from the book and discussed their favourite characters and events within the narrative. After that, the class took part in art activities based around our favourite characters. The group recreated some character drawings from the book itself before creating a silhouette of Willy Wonka and his famous sweets.
Fantastic work everyone!
