Year 6 have been learning all about Britain at War and welcomed Liz from Bletchley Park into school!
Liz brought with her an Enigma machine that was actually used by the Germans in World War 2 to transmit coded messages. An Enigma machine allows for billions of ways to encode a message (see the picture for the real figure), which would have made it incredibly difficult for other nations to crack the codes during the war.
Liz demonstrated how it worked and the group were amazed at the intricate details inside the machine and the ways in which it worked. The class also got to see a virtual tour of Bletchley Park while Liz explained its importance during WW2. Before Liz left, she held a special assembly for Key Stage 2 pupils to share her knowledge!
What a great experience!
